En la esquina Sur Oriente de la plaza central se encuentra el primer edificio de dos niveles construido en 1558. Aun que el piso era de madera y restituido posteriormente, cuenta con hermosos arcos que detienen su estructura. La Audiencia de los Confines o Capitanía General de Guatemala era gobernada desde ese lugar (en ese entonces Chiapas, parte de Yucatán, Guatemala, Belice, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua y Costa Rica), y en el se ubicaban las oficinas gubernamentales, administrativas y militares. El Capitán General llevaba una vida acomodada y de lujo con sus familiares y personajes distinguidos que visitaban el lugar. El palacio fue dañado por los sismos que azotaron La Capital de Santiago de Los Caballeros durante los años 1717 y 1751, su fachada u pisos se destruyeron quedando los suficientes cimientos para su reconstrucción en 1755 y terminándolo en 1764. Pero la naturaleza nuevamente hizo nuevos daños en el terremoto de 1773. Se intentó trasladar las columnas del edificio cuando se trasladó la ciudad capital al valle de la Ermita, pero no fue posible por el peso de las mismas. Por lo que se procedió a demoler parte del edificio y fue entonces hasta 1936 cuando se reconstruyó el edificio para dar uso del mismo para oficinas de Gobernación departamental en incluso se trasladó una bella fuente del convento de Santa Clara. La Capitanía General alberga hoy las oficinas del INGUAT, Gremial de Turismo de Antigua, Policía Nacional Civil, y La Gobernación Departamental entre otras.

In the southeast corner of the Central Plaza, is located the first two-story building constructed in 1558. Made with a wooden floor (restored later) and beautiful arches that support the whole structure. The General Captaincy of Guatemala was governed from this building (at those times formed by: Chiapas, a part of Yucatan, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica), and inside it all the government, administrative and military offices worked there. The General Captain's, life was full of luxuries for himself, his family and friends. The earthquakes that stroke the city of Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala during the years of 1717 and 1751 damaged the palace. Its façade and levels were destroyed, but the remaining basis permitted its rebuilt, in 1755, finishing it in 1764. But the nature stroke again, when an earthquake in 1773 shook the city. An intended for transferring the building's columns was made when the city moved into the Ermita Valley, but it wasn't possible because they were too heavy. So they decided to demolish part of the building, and in 1936 the building was restored to lodge the Department Government offices, in which a nice fountain from Santa Clara convent was moved in.
Today, the General Captaincy lodges: the offices of INGUAT, the National Police headquarter, and the Department Government offices, among others.
